Bryophytes treatment during the workshop

First step: extraction of enveloppes from the herbarium

Enveloppes with unidentified specimens or with specimen with a pre-identification, usually given on the field are sorted out from the herbarium, up to the working room.

Checking identification

It is often impossible to identify species by eyes, and observation through lens or microscopes are necessary.
Here, Nick Hodgetts and Lisa Lavocat-Bernard are checking mosses.

Computerization of the new identifications and labels information

All the checked specimen then join the students team who enter the information of the label, including new identification and identifier on Brahms database. After data cleaning, these information will be uploaded on the GBIF website.

On September 27th, was held  the First Malagasy-French meeting at MuseumNational d'Histoire Naturelle. As we could not be there, because working in TAN herbarium, we decided to post this video for the participants. VIDEO IN FRENCH.

Xper2 is a knowledge data bases system. Xper2 and its associated tools is a plate-form dedicated to taxonomic descriptions and computer-aided-identification. It requires no special computer skills. It is very easy to use for the amateur naturalist that wants to identify a specimen with an already made application, as well as for the professional taxonomist that creates new applications. It is developped by the lab LIS , a bioinformatic component of the Institut de Systématique Evolution Biodiversité at the MNHN.
Xper2 is the local version, on your computer.
Xper3 is the online version.

After one week spent at the Herbarium of TAN, we left for Andasibe, 120 km East from Antananarivo, in order to enhance the knowledge on bryophytes diversity by new collection.
Our cars are loaded in front of our GuestHouse Tanajacaranda.

workshop day 4
By Catherine Reeb 26 Sep, 2018
During the workshop, students are trained to bryophytes diversity: the different groups of bryophytes, how to recognized them, how to manage bryophyte collection etc. Each researcher participates to the training, depending of their own observations, and on the students questions.
Here, Roger Lala Andriamiarisoa (standing at the door) and Catherine Reeb on his right are showing how to use an identification key to identify mosses.

A part of our team, from left to right, Eberhard Fischer (Germany), Nick Hodgets (UK), Anrea Sass (Hungaria) inaugurate our working room. A part of microscopes and lens were borrowed from Tana University, thanks to the department of Biologie Végétale.
During this firts day, we just finished to install the room, we tested the organisation and began our first observation.
